- 1). Start your computer as normal and wait for Windows Vista to fully boot.
- 2). Click the "Start" button and navigate to "All Programs." Select "Windows Defender" from the menu.
- 3). Select "Tools" and click on "Software Explorer." This will open a new window on your computer. Look for the "Category" box and select "Startup Programs."
- 4). Look through the assortment of programs that are listed and choose those that you do not want to automatically start when Vista boots. Highlight the program you want to turn off by clicking on it and then select "Disable."
- 5). Click "Yes" to confirm that you want to disable the selected program. Continue to select the programs you want to disable in the same manner.
- 6). Restart your computer in order for the changes you've made to take effect. If you're worried that you've disabled programs essential to Vista, try clicking on the program and starting it manually after you've restarted the computer. If you encounter any problems, simply go back and enable the program from the start-up list.
