How to Use Circular Needles

    Seamless Knitting

    • 1). Cast stitches onto the end of the circular needle that you hold in your left hand. The number will depend on the instructions you are following. Cast on one extra stitch.

    • 2). Lay the needle down on a flat surface and check that the stitches are not twisted. All loops should be facing the same direction. If twisted, they will create a problem as you progress, and you will have to rip out your work all the way back to the twist.

    • 3). Pick the needle up again, and move the first stitch from the right needle onto the left needle to start the joining process. Place a piece of contrasting-colored yarn between the first two stitches on the left needle to mark the beginning of the row. Knit these two stitches together. Pull them tight to firm up the joined area.

    • 4). Start knitting, going into the stitches on the left-hand needle as you normally would. On circular needles with seamless knitting, you are always working on the right side of the fabric. For example, if your instructions say to "knit all rows when working on the right side and purl all rows when working on the wrong side," you will knit all rows instead, because you are always working on the right side. This same concept carries over to any pattern you are doing, including increases and decreases.

    • 5). Start the row with the new circular needle of the appropriate size in your right hand, if instructions tell you to change needles. Once that row is finished you will have transferred all your stitches onto the new circular needle. Push the stitches to the other end of the circular needle, so they are now closest to the end of the left-hand needle. Continue knitting into the stitches on the left-hand needle.

    • 6). Finish off the project just as you would working with two separate needles.

Some seamless projects need to be started on four double-pointed needles before they are large enough to go onto the circular needles. Your knitting instructions will direct you when to transfer to the circular needles.

    • 2). Knit with the circular needle on the right and go into the stitches on the left double-pointed needle at the beginning of the row. When done with the first needle, go onto the second, third and forth until all the stitches are on the right circular needle.

    • 3). Distribute the stitches over the cable. Continue knitting into the stitches on the left needle.

    • 4). Finish off the project as you normally would with regular needles.

Knitting on Circular Needles for Large Projects

    • 1). Cast the stitches onto the left needle.

    • 2). Reverse the needles at the end of each row as you would with straight needles.

    • 3). Finish off the project as you would with two separate needles.
