- 1). Be certain the painting has dried adequately before applying the resin; if not, the paint will be smeared, smudged or absorbed into the resin, thereby destroying the image. Alkyd-based paint should dry for three months, while oil-based paint needs twice as long.
- 2). Brush off any dust or dirt lightly with a dry cloth or soft-bristled brush once the painting is dry. The painting should be as clean as possible for the resin to adhere to the paint.
- 3). Place the painting on a vertical surface; sawhorses work well to both elevate the painting and allow sufficient airflow to aid the drying process. Spread the dropcloth beneath the painting.
- 4). Mix the two components of the resin. Pour it on to the painting, spreading the resin carefully with a brush to ensure even coverage.
- 5). Allow the painting to dry for at least eight hours before moving it. Be sure to allow at least five days drying time before hanging the painting.
