How to Remove an NTFS Partition

    • 1). Insert the Windows XP installation CD into your CD/DVD drive and restart your computer. When powering on, your PC should be reading from the CD/DVD drive, and you will see a message on your screen indicating that it is loading Windows Setup. If your machine starts up as it normally does (with the Windows logo), then yours is a rare case where the BIOS is not configured to boot from the CD as its first option. To fix this, consult the BIOS set-up documentation for your PC, then repeat step 1.

    • 2). Wait for the Welcome to Windows Setup screen to arrive, then press "Enter."

    • 3). Press F8 (accepting the Windows Licensing Agreement ).

    • 4). If you already have Windows installed on this PC, you will be asked if you want to repair that installation. Skip this step by pressing "Esc ".

    • 5). At this point, you will be presented with a listing of all partitioned and free space segments for each hard disk you have installed. Each listing contains key details such as the size of the partition (in megabytes), its file system type and an asterisk that identifies whether it is a system partition or not.

    • 6). Use the arrow keys to find the exact partition you wish to delete. Look for a partition marked as NTFS whose size matches the one you wish to delete. Remember that one gigabyte equals 1,000 megabytes (MB). So if you know the partition you want to remove is 200 GB in size, look for a listing whose size is around 200,000 MB.

    • 7). With the arrow highlighted over the partition you wish to remove, press "D."

    • 8). Press "L" to confirm the deletion. The partition is now removed.

    • 9). If you wish to remove more partitions, repeat from Step 6. If not, press F3 once, then F3 again to exit from Windows Setup.
