- Begin the craft by asking the child to place both of his hands on a piece of sturdy paper. Poster board is the best type of paper for this project, since the sturdiness will provide ample support for the wings to stick out from the body. If poster board isn't possible, you may use construction paper. Have the child splay out his finger and trace his hand, tracing each individual finger, along with the palm, as you draw. The fingerprint is then cut out along the lines to create the angel's wings.
- The handprint is then glued or taped to an upside-down white, Styrofoam cup, with the wings at the back. The child can color the cup in light, pastel colors in the clothing she thinks an angel might wear. Some pieces of wrapping paper in gold or silver glued to the body creates a nice robe for the angel. Gluing some lace at the bottom of the cup is a nice touch, creating the hem of the fabric in folds as it touches the floor. Glue more lace at the top of the cup to create a neckline. A piece of ribbon glued around the middle creates a sash for the angel to hold his robe in place.
- To make the angel appear to be the angelic child, cut out the child's head and shoulders from a picture of him. The head needs to be about 2 inches wide by about 2 inches tall. Glue or tape this picture to the back of the cup on the space above the wings. To create a halo above his head, bend a silver piece of chenille into a circle at the end of the straight chenille. Glue or tape the straight part to the back of the child's picture. Add some pieces of yarn on either side of the child's head, or leave it as is, if there is hair visible in the child's picture.
- Create several angels using pictures of the whole family. If you can't use pictures, cut out circles from poster paper and draw faces on them, gluing on some string for hair. To create the angel scene, place the angels in a circle with their wings touching. Glue the wings to each other. This scene could be placed on some tissue paper or soft, sparkly cotton sheets. Pack it away for next season by putting the circle of angels into a large box with bunched-up newspapers to hold it in place.
