- 1). Measure how much to cut off of the bottom of the door. With a pencil, mark this location on both the hinge and handle side. Remove the door by sliding out the hinge pins. Lay the door across two saw horses. Using a straightedge, draw a line between the two marks.
- 2). Use the utility knife and straightedge to score the cutting line about one-sixteenth-inch deep. The scoring will minimize the amount of splintering of the door material.
- 3). Tape pieces of chipboard on both sides of the cutting line. As it cuts, the saw will slide on this surface instead of the surface of the door, preventing the saw from leaving scuff marks on the door.
- 4). Line the saw blade up with your marked line and slowly cut the door.
- 5). Use sandpaper to gently sand out any roughness.
- 6). Paint the cut bottom to moisture seal the material. No-VOC paint is recommended for the cleanest air quality.
- 7). After the paint has dried, remount the door on its hinges and check for ease of movement.
