- 1). Cut four 3-inch long and 1-1/2-inch wide tabs from the coordinating fabric. Fold the tabs lengthwise in thirds. Sew an edge-stitch along both lengthwise edges of all four tabs.
- 2). Press the tabs flat with an iron. Fold a tab over each of the handle attachment rings, pin the two raw edges together and sew with a basting stitch to help the tabs in place. Repeat with the second handle.
- 3). Align the handles and tabs on the short sides of the place mat to make the handle centered. Sew the raw edge of the tabs to the placement to secure both handles.
- 4). Cut a piece of coordinating fabric the same size as the place mat to create a purse lining. Press under a 1/4-inch hem around the four sides of the lining.
- 5). Place the lining on top of the placement so the wrong sides are together. Fold the place mat and lining in half with the right sides together. Pin the side seams to hold the purse shape.
- 6). Sew the side seams with a 1/2-inch seam. Turn the place mat purse so the right sides are out. Pull the handles out through the top opening.
- 7). Edge stitch around the top of the place mat to attach the lining to the place mat.
