How to Repair an Engine Leak

    • 1). Inspect the parts of your engine to locate the source of the leak. Begin with the engine oil fill port. Inspect the condition of the cap. If the cap is missing, you will have to replace the unit, but if the cap is leaking, you can replace the cap seal.

    • 2). Inspect the engine oil filter. Be sure the filter is installed properly; the filter needs to seal to prevent leaking. Replace if needed.

    • 3). Check the condition of the valve cover gasket; it should be free of cracks. Be sure the valve cover is tight. Use a wrench to tighten the bolts, if they are loose. If you still discover a leak, you will need to replace the gasket.

    • 4). Check the condition of the oil drain plug at the bottom of the engine oil pan. If the sealing washer of the drain plug is loose, tighten it with a wrench. If the plug is tight but still leaking, you will have to replace the washer.

    • 5). Inspect the engine oil pan. Be sure the gasket of the engine oil pan properly seals to the engine block. If the gasket is failing, remove the oil pan and replace the gasket.
