How to Change the Disc Brakes on an F-150

    • 1). Loosen the lug nuts on the front wheels using a tire iron.

    • 2). Jack the front end of the truck up and set it on jack stands. Follow the manufacturer's instructions regarding the proper use of the jack and the stands.

    • 3). Remove the front wheels from the truck. Use the tire iron to remove the lug nuts, then pull the wheels free from the truck and set them aside.

    • 4). Remove the pin that secures the brake caliper on the brake disc, or rotor. Loosen any bolts holding the pin in place, then knock the pin free with a hammer and flat-head screwdriver.

    • 5). Use a flat-head screwdriver to remove the old brake pads. Set the caliper aside.

    • 6). Pry off the grease cap on the brake-rotor assembly and set it aside.

    • 7). Remove the bolt in the step of the rotor assembly and pull the rotor free of the axle.

    • 8). Clean the brake rotor with brake-cleaning spray and wipe it down with a rag.

    • 9). Smear a dollop of grease on the inside of the new rotor assembly. Coat both the inside and outside wheel bearings with grease and fit them into the rotor assembly.

    • 10

Slide the new rotor assembly onto the axle and fasten it with the rotor bolt.

    • 11

Place the grease cap back onto the end of the rotor and gently tap it into place.

    • 12

Open the brake-fluid release valve on the brake caliper. Compress the caliper with a C-clamp. Remove the C-clamp from the compressed caliper.

    • 13

Place new brake pads on each side of the brake caliper. Position the anti-rattle clips on the ends of each pad.

    • 14

Fit the caliper over the brake rotor and slide the pin back in place. Use a hammer to knock the pin into position.

    • 15

Reattach whatever bolt or bolts was removed from the caliper when the pin was removed.

    • 16

Reattach the wheel over the newly attached rotor. Tighten the lug nuts with the tire iron.

    • 17

Repeat these steps for the second wheel and brake assembly.

    • 18

Raise the truck by using the jack until the jack stands can be removed. Then lower the truck to the ground.

    • 19

Re-tighten the lugs nuts with the tire iron until they are secure.

    • 20

Check the level of your brake fluid and fill if necessary.
