- 1). Inspect the front of the engine, and locate the spring-loaded belt tensioner on the front of the motor. The tensioner is under the power steering pump and the idler pulley. Use the bolt head in the center of the pulley attached to the bottom of the tensioner arm to rotate the entire tensioner.
- 2). Rotate the tensioner from the pulley bolt clockwise with a breaker bar and a socket. Slide the belt off of the top of the pulley, and hang it to the power steering pump pulley with the bungee strap to prevent the belt from slipping out of the other pulleys.
- 3). Locate the single mounting bolt in the middle of the upper tensioner arm. Loosen and remove the bolt with a ratchet and a socket.
- 4). Pull the tensioner off of the engine block with your hand. Position the new tensioner onto the same area of the engine block, and screw the mounting bolt back in through the tensioner. Tighten the bolt with a ratchet and socket.
- 5). Turn the tensioner from the pulley bolt clockwise again with the breaker bar. Remove the bungee strap from the belt, and slide it under the tensioner pulley. Release the tensioner until the tensioner pulley stops retracting against the belt. Remove the breaker bar from the tensioner pulley.
- 6). Crank the 1998 Camaro, and inspect the new tensioner as the belt is traveling under the tensioner pulley. The tensioner should allow the pulley to move up and down freely with the movement of the belt. Turn off the engine.
