How to Remove a WGA Tool from Vista

    • 1). Restart your computer. Hold down "F8" as the computer boots to start in Safe Mode.

    • 2). Open the Registry Editor by typing "regedit" into the "Run" dialog box (located in the Start menu) or simply type it into the Vista Start menu search box.

    • 3). Navigate to "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon\Notify." Locate the "WgaLogon" folder within the Registry Editor. Right-click on the folder and click "Delete."

    • 4). Simultaneously press "Ctrl-Alt-Delete" to bring up the Task Manager. Locate the process named "wgatray.exe" and select "End Process."

    • 5). Open the folder located at "C:\Windows\System32," then right-click and delete the file "wgatray.exe." Delete the same file located in "C:\Windows\System32\dllcache"

    • 6). Restart your computer. When it boots up, you will be notified of the missing services. Make note of the listed missing services.

    • 7). Open the Start menu and type "msconfig" into the "Run" prompt (or Search bar). Select the "Services" tab of the msconfig window and deselect the listed services noted in the previous step. Once complete, you will no longer be bother by the Windows Genuine Advantage tool and notifications.
