- 1). Clean the surface with a rag and trisodium phosphate cleanser. Dirt and dust interfere with painter's tape adhesion, causing sloppier results. For a crisp square, you need to work on a clean surface.
- 2). Smooth out any rough surface with 150-grit sandpaper. A very bumpy surface also makes it hard to achieve crisp lines, but sandpaper smooths out imperfections.
- 3). Remove leftover sandpaper dust with a damp rag, and dry the surface with a towel.
- 4). Measure your square and lightly mark its edges with a pencil. Use a protractor to ensure 90-degree angles and a tape measure for sides that are equal in length.
- 5). Outline your squares with painter's tape.
- 6). Prime the surface with a general-purpose primer and paintbrush.
- 7). Apply latex or oil-based paint to the surface. Paintbrushes are best for small squares, while a paint roller is ideal for larger retro squares.
- 8). Apply a second coat after the first coat dries.
- 9). Peel off the painter's tape after the final coat dries.
- 10
Erase any pencil marks.
