- 1). Gather your supplies to lubricate your hood latch. The supplies include a cloth, WD-40, sandpaper and lithium grease. You can find lithium grease near the WD-40 in store, and if you like WD-40, you can buy the lithium grease the WD-40 Company manufactures called White Lithium Grease 3-in-One.
- 2). Pop the hood of your Ford Explorer and use the bracing arm to secure it. Then, use a clean cloth or rag to wipe away the grease, sand and other grime that has accumulated around the latch. Make sure you clean out the old grease and dirt that has collected down inside the latch assembly, as well. You may have to use your fingers or something pointed, like a screwdriver, to get down inside.
- 3). Sand away any rust spots that have developed on the latch since the last time you lubricated your hood latch. Then, brush away the rust particles with your hand or cloth. Spray the area with WD-40. This protects the metal from further rust development.
- 4). Lubricate the hood latch on your Ford Explorer by spraying a lithium grease into the latch assembly. Activate the latch a couple of times to work the grease over all the metal parts. This coating of grease prevents the metal from corroding and from sticking.
- 5). Move to the back of the SUV and repeat the process on your back hatch latch. Before beginning you may want to vacuum the carpet (if equipped) around the latch, so you don't get any loose dirt inside the mechanism while you're working.
