How to Troubleshoot the Exhaust System in a Plymouth Neon

    • 1). Raise and support the Plymouth Neon safely. Place four safety stands underneath the car to give you enough room to fit completely underneath it and view the whole exhaust system.

    • 2). Start your inspection at the exhaust manifold or turbocharger near the front and work your way to the rear. Remember to check both sides of the car for a dual exhaust system.

    • 3). Make sure no components directly touch the body or suspension. This can cause the system to overheat and wear down quicker.

    • 4). Check for any signs of deterioration in the whole system. This includes open seams, loose connections and holes. Look for such deterioration especially in places where fumes would travel into the passenger compartment.

    • 5). Inspect the mounting brackets and hangers for deterioration, along with the gaskets on the flanges. If the car uses large rubber o-rings, see if they've been overstretched and aren't providing any support any longer. Replace these components if necessary.

    • 6). Look over the muffler and exhaust pipe. These parts are known for rotting and crumbling away over time, especially near the welds and seams. You may also find cracks in the muffler, requiring immediate replacement.

    • 7). Poke into the system with some form of pointed tool. This will help you discover deterioration spots in the system and if those spots have reached the crumbling point.
