- A professional stone cutter and masonry bit are required to cut a sink hole for the kitchen counter top. Stone is a very hard material and normal drill bits or saws will not do the job. In order to cut the hole for the sink and faucets use a professional grade stone cutting bit designed for granite with a high powered miter stone saw. Lubricants are also a requirement to complete the job. Without them the saw bit will heat up very fast, warp and break. If you are a novice, follow the instructions of a professional before attempting this task.
- The first step when cutting a sink hole into a granite counter top is to layout the cut. Set the granite slab on a stable surface and accurately measure the exact location of the sink. Then create a template for the hole, which is usually 1/2 to 1 inch smaller in width and length than the sink itself. Place the slab on the counter top if possible. Line up the drain hole and ensure the installation will connect to existing plumbing. Then locate the faucet connections and holes for the sink and handles. Mark each with a strong chalk marker and ruler. Measure the fixture holes exactly and then match them to the correct masonry bit.
- To cut the faucet hole set the granite slab onto stable saw horses or another cutting surface. Drill into the slab straight down with your masonry bit to form the holes. The sink hole is cut with a diamond bit saw or other granite cutting material using a professional stone cutting saw. This saw provides lubrication for the cut. To round and finish the edges, a diamond bit router must be used. This is for sinks that lay flush with the surface of the counter.
