- 1). Loosen the bolt that holds the negative battery cable to the negative battery lead. The negative cable connects the battery terminal to the frame of the Passat. Use a 10-mm wrench to turn the bolt two full revolutions, enabling you to remove the cable from the terminal.
- 2). Place a trim panel removal tool or flat screwdriver into the crease that separates the dash panel around the stereo and the main dash panel on the dashboard. Pry the smaller panel free from the dash. Allow the panel to hang in front of the dashboard. Do not disconnect the airbag wiring to avoid a trip to the dealership for reconnection.
- 3). Remove the two bolt screws on either side of the factory stereo with an 8-mm socket and drive. Save the screws for use during the installation of the new unit.
- 4). Slide the stock deck from the Volkswagen's stereo mount. Unplug the two stereo wiring connectors from the outlets on the back of the stereo. Disconnect the antenna cable from the deck and set the stereo aside.
- 5). Insert the Volkswagen stereo installation kit (faceplate adapter) into the dock. Screw in the bolt screws to secure the adapter in place within the stereo mounting dock.
- 6). Plug the stereo wiring into the leads of the wiring harness adapter. Plug the adapter's leads into the appropriate outlets of the new CD player. Plug the antenna cable lead into the antenna outlet on the back of the CD player.
- 7). Slide the new deck into the opening provided by the faceplate adapter. Push the CD player into the installation kit until it locks into place.
- 8). Replace the smaller dash panel over the stereo assembly. Press around the panel to snap it back against the dashboard.
- 9). Replace the negative battery cable over the negative battery terminal. Tighten the bolt to secure the cable's clamp with the 10-mm wrench.
