- 1). Draw a rough sketch of your bathroom without the fixtures. Use graph paper so you can draw the room to scale. Allow each block to be equal to one square foot. Label the current plumbing layout and where the doors and windows are located. Measure the sides of the square room so you know that it is square, and exactly how much space you have.
- 2). Make a list of what fixtures and accessories you will be placing in the bathroom floor plan. Measure the length and the width of each piece. For example, a three-foot-by-two-foot vanity will take up an area of three squares by two squares on your drawing.
- 3). Draw the fixtures on a separate sheet of graph paper and cut them out so they can be moved around the room.
- 4). Contact your local building inspector to learn of the specific building codes for bathrooms in your area. You will want to know what the minimum distances are in front of a toilet or vanity and how far each can be placed from other fixtures.
- 5). Leave the toilet in the current space and place the vanity and tub along the bathroom walls. Try to stay as close to the current plumbing as possible to minimize costs. You can easily move the tub to the location of the sink and move the sink to the bathtub wall.
- 6). Place the bathtub on the far end of the wall from the door and move the other pieces around the perimeter of the room to maximize space.
