How to Clean a Cooking Pot That Has Burnt Food on It

    • 1). Fill the pot or pan you are cleaning with enough water to cover the burnt-on food. Add 1/2 cup of salt. Mix with a plastic spatula to blend the salt and water, reports Reader's Digest.

    • 2). Allow the pot or pan you are cleaning to sit for about an hour. If the food has loosened you can clean the pan with dish soap and water. Put the pot or pan on the stovetop and boil the water if the food has not loosened.

    • 3). Remove the pot or pan from the stove once the water has come to a rolling boil. Allow it to sit for at least 12 hours, then put the pot back on the stovetop and boil the water again.

    • 4). Remove the pot from the stove and allow the pot to cool enough to touch. Wash the pot with dish soap and water.

    • 5). Fill the pot with enough water to cover the burnt-on food again if it still hasn't come clean. Put a fabric softener sheet or about 1 tbsp. of liquid fabric softener in the water. Cover the dish and let it soak for an hour. Wash with dish soap and water.
