- 1). Wash the wooden bench using a pressure washer equipped with a low-pressure tip. Wait one full day for the bench to dry.
- 2). Sand the wooden bench using a palm sander stocked with 120-grit sandpaper. Sand with the wood grain. Stop sanding when the wooden bench appears dull.
- 3). Stock the palm sander with 220-grit sandpaper. Sand the wooden bench. Sand with the wood grain. Stop when the wooden bench feels smooth.
- 4). Cover the area beneath the bench with drop cloths.
- 5). Coat the wooden bench with oil-based stain, using a paintbrush engineered for use with oil paints. Wipe excess stain from the bench using cloth rags. Wait a minimum of six hours for the stained bench to dry.
- 6). Wash stain from the brush with mineral spirits.
- 7). Coat the stained wooden bench with varnish, using the clean paintbrush. Wait six hours before sitting on the bench.
