- 1). Wrap the yarn around the crochet hook once. Hook the strand of yarn with the hook and pull it through the loop. You now have a slip knot to start your plain square.
- 2). Pull the yarn through the slip knot six times to create a small chain. Connect the chain into a loop by pushing the hook through the first link in your chain, hooking the yarn and pulling it back through the loop.
- 3). Start your first row of stitches by pulling the strand of yarn through the slip knot with the hook. Put the hook through the nearest loop of your chain, hook the yarn strand and pull it back through to create a stitch. Repeat this process all the way around the chain. Pull the strand of yarn through the slip knot to create another row. As you crochet, your slip knot will always remain on the hook.
- 4). Crochet a few stitches as you did in step 3. At the fourth stitch, make four stitches in the same loop to create a corner. Stitch three stitches and then make four stitches into the same loop to create the next corner. Repeat the process until all four corners are stitched and you are back where you started. Pull the loose yarn strand through the slip knot to start another row.
- 5). Crochet the same pattern all the way around, with four stitches in the same loop for the corners. The amount of stitches of each row will increase as you go, and your plain square will become larger. There will be larger holes in the corners to help keep you on track to know where to add the four stitches in the same loops.
- 6). Cut off the yarn with scissors after your last stitch when your square is as large as you want it. Be sure to leave at least a few inches of excess strand when you cut the yarn. Pull the strand through the slip knot and remove the crochet hook. Pull the strand and it will tighten the knot and secure your crocheted square.
