- 1). Before you purchase any embellishments, design pieces or put a down payment on fabrications such as window treatments or flooring, mock up your future house in programs such as Google SketchUp or Home Designer Pro, which allow users to digitally create their custom home and try out specific design fabrications in a 3D setting.
- 2). Play around with textures, designs and colors. Decide whether you want your custom home to be contemporary---with minimalistic décor, stark colors and angular fabrication---or if you want to go for a more classic design with a colorful palette and intricate, embellished design.
- 3). Follow a similar color palette when picking out colors to paint your walls. Go to a home goods store such as Home Depot or Lowe's and consult color options with a paint expert. Color families that are great for the home include: beiges, reds and even whites.
- 4). Choose your floor materials with an eye for the design flow. For example, if your living room is carpeted and your kitchen has mahogany floors, put in a runner that blends the two flooring types. A house built with all wood floors would be the best example of flowing design, as there are no distinct changes in the type of flooring.
- 5). Purchase items for your custom home with a similar texture, color and design and place them strategically throughout your home. Window treatments, furniture, artwork, vases, area rugs and other fabrications can provide uniformity between rooms.
- 6). Consult your builder and/or your interior designer about your design choices. Then start making purchases that mimic your design mock-up.
