- 1). Clean up all errors on your hard drive by running "Disk Check." In Windows 7 and Vista, you will find this option under "My Computer." Select the option for "Error Checking" under the Tools menu. In Windows XP, go to "Check Disk" under the same menu and click on the "Start" button. This will find any errors on your hard disk.
- 2). Delete all temporary files, as these tend to take up space and slow down your computer. Go to the "Disk Cleanup" option under "System Tools" and select all temporary files you want to delete, and then click on the "Delete" button.
- 3). Organize your data so your computer can find files quickly. You can do this by running your "Disk Defragmenter." Under "My Computer" go to "Properties" and then "Tools" and click on "Defragment Now" to run the program.
- 4). Turn on your Automatic Updates options to get the latest Windows updates. These updates tend to offer efficient rewrites to certain aspects of the Windows environment, helping you to run your computer more efficiently. Go to your "Programs" menu and select "Change Settings." Under this option, select Automatic Updates" and click on the "OK" button to turn on Windows Updates.
