- 1). Cut your Sheetrock to a size slightly larger than your hole. To ensure that you don’t misjudge the size, measure it and measure your Sheetrock patch at least ½ inch larger by cutting it with a utility knife.
- 2). Cut the hole to fit this Sheetrock snugly. This will mean expanding the size of the hole already in your wall and making it a more regular shape so your Sheetrock will fit flush.
- 3). Attach slats of wood inside the hole using drywall screws. Place each slate of wood horizontally, putting one about an inch from the top of the opening and another about an inch from the bottom. In doing so, you create a brace to hold your Sheetrock.
- 4). Place the Sheetrock piece into the hole. Take care to arrange it as flush against the rest of the wall as you can.
- 5). Apply putty to fill the cracks that remain and secure the Sheetrock piece. Use a putty knife to slather the putty over the entire area, pressing it firmly into the openings between the Sheetrock addition and the original wall.
- 6). Sand the spot with a fine-grit sandpaper. Test the smoothness with your hand, gliding it over and feeling for any bumps or dimples. Keep sanding until you reach the desired smoothness.
- 7). Apply a layer of primer. Do not skip this step, even if using a paint advertised as paint plus primer, as your Sheetrock isn’t sealed and priming is therefore necessary.
- 8). Paint the spot with paint in the same color as the rest of the wall, allowing it to dry between coats. If you do not have any of the paint that you originally used to paint the wall remaining, take a piece of the wall extracted from the hole and have it matched at a paint store or home improvement center to get perfectly matched paint.
