- 1). Mount the reel on the rod handle and then remove the reel's top cover by unscrewing it from the reel in a counterclockwise direction.
- 2). Pull the end of the fishing line from the spool of monofilament line, leave the spool on the floor if you are filling the reel by yourself. Feed the end of the line through the top hole in the reel cover and let the cover lay loose with the line running through it.
- 3). Hold the end of the line in one hand and take hold of the line with the other hand about 10 inches up from the end. Slip the line that is between your hands under the reel's line spool cap and pull it against the empty line spool.
- 4). Tie an overhand knot, like starting show laces, and pull the line tight around the spool. Tie a second over hand knot in the line and pull it tight against the first knot which is now around the spool and under the cover. Pull the line tight and clip off the end of the line sticking out from the spool.
- 5). Put the reel cover, with the line running through the hole, back onto the reel and screw it down.
- 6). Clamp the rod handle between your knees, hold the line snuggly between your thumb and forefinger 12 inches above the reel while holding up the rod with your other three fingers. Begin reeling the line onto the spool while keeping tension on the line, this will keep the line from twisting and wrapping too loose around the spool, the spool will fill as you reel in the line.
- 7). Remove the reel cover to periodically check on how much line is on the spool. The spool is partially covered by the spool cap, but you can view the spool through the open space under the cap. Look through the space, if the line has reached the inside of the spool cover that is enough line and no more needs to be reeled in. If the line has not reached the inside of the cap replace the cover and reel in more line until the line has reached the inside of the cap.
- 8). Cut the incoming line 2 feet above the reel and tie the end off to the first line guide on the rod.
