What Is Orange Roughy?

    General Appearance

    • Orange roughy are egg-shaped fish with massive eyes and jaws, tapering to a narrow tail. It has one long dorsal fin consisting of 10 or 12 soft rays. It grows to an average length of 29.5 inches (75 cm).

    Color

    • When alive, the fish are often a bright pink or a brick red. However, after they die, they then turn yellow or orange, giving the orange roughy its name.

    Life Span

    • According to FishBase, from the evidence of trace mineral analysis of the fish's ear bones, orange roughy can live up to 149 years. However, they do not reach sexual maturity until they are about 20 years old.

    Habits

    • Not much is known of the orange roughy, but it is thought to be a slow-moving fish living 590 to 5905 feet (180-1800 meters) below the sea's surface. They eat zooplankton, very small fish and small squid.

    Predators

    • People aren't the only predators for orange roughy. They are also eaten by deep-sea sharks, snake mackerels and cutthroat eels.
