Grease is found in and around many materials, from deep-fried foods to mechanical and automobile parts. Removing grease is tricky since it separates from water. Along with the right cleansers, the proper techniques and methods must be employed to remove grease from clothing. - Gear lubricant is a substance many mechanics use to loosen locked-up gears from thick, clustered grease. Spray the lubricant directly onto the clothing. This method works well for automobile grease on your clothes. Use either a nail brush to move the lubricant around on the fabric, or rub the fabric together with itself to agitate the substance deep into the grease. Rinse with cool water and wash as you normally do.
- Only use ammonia to lift grease from clothing that is light in color, as it might fade fabrics that are dark, such as jeans and blue or red shirts. Dab ammonia onto a cloth, then apply the cloth to the grease with pressure. The ammonia should lift the grease up onto the cloth and away from the fabric. If the material does fade, the Cleaning Tips website suggests using a small amount of white vinegar on the area to lift out the ammonia. Doing this before washing the item can prevent permanent fading.
- Dark sodas are strongly acidic and therefore work as an opposing force to the oily grease settled into clothing. In addition to the chemical composition of soda, the carbonation also helps to agitate the grease from its place and lift it away. Use a small amount of soda on a cloth and press or rub into the grease spot. Wash as you normally do.
- Detergent works well to rid stains, but to remove grease residue from clothing you must use one specifically designed to do so. Apply a small amount of a dish-washing detergent specifically designed to break apart grease to the fabric, then rub the fabric together to press the soap into the grease. Wash as you normally do.
- Daily clarifying shampoos are made to remove oil from your hair and scalp, therefore lift up grease from clothing as well. Apply a small amount of the shampoo to the item and rub vigorously until it lathers well. Wash the clothing immediately for best results.
