- Activate your copy of Windows within the activation period. If you don't activate Windows within the time allowed, you will receive a message stating, "Your activation period has expired." You will receive an option to click on a link that allows you to activate Windows online. You can also choose the option to activate Windows over the telephone or using a modem connection.
- Use your product key on only one computer. If you receive a message stating that the product key that you are attempting to enter is in use on another computer, you are attempting to re-use a key that is already in use. Under Microsoft software license terms, only one copy of Windows can be installed and activated on each computer. You must purchase a second product key to activate the second copy of Windows.
- Type your activation key properly to successfully activate Windows. If you receive a message stating that your key isn't valid, be sure that you typed it correctly. Verify that the product key that you type matches the key that is assigned to your Windows operating system. Mistyping product keys is one of the most common problems with activating Windows.
- If you don't have your product key, you will be unable to activate Windows. The key is located on the package of the installation disk that accompanies your operating system. If you can't locate your key, you are able to purchase another one from Microsoft by accessing its main website. Once you purchase another key, you can enter it and activate Windows.
