- 1). Use a carpet pre-treatment spray designed especially for steam cleaning. These can be found at your local department store.
- 2). Spray the pre-treatment solution on the area where the dirt is embedded and allow it to soak in the carpet for several minutes to an hour. You may need to repeat this step after you use the steam cleaner, depending on how bad the stains are.
- 3). If the dirt is heavily embedded in the carpet you can use a sponge to work the pre-treatment solution into the carpet.
- 1). Remove the furniture from the room so that you can clean the entire carpet.
- 2). Use the steam cleaner, with the steam cleaning solutions, and follow the cleaner directions to remove the embedded dirt. This may take more than one try, depending on the area you are cleaning and the type of embedded dirt you are dealing with.
- 3). Be sure to extract as much liquid from the carpet as possible so that bacteria does not develop and so that the carpet does not attract dirt after cleaning.
