- 1). Remove the cabinet hinges and hardware. Take the cabinet doors off the cabinet frames and remove the knobs or handles. Place the pieces in a plastic bag to prevent loss during the cheap home remodeling project.
- 2). Mark the location of the doors. Using a small square of masking tape, write the original location on the back of the door with a marker. This makes the job of re-assembly much easier after painting the old cabinets.
- 3). Wash all the cabinets. Before painting the old cabinets, wash the doors and cabinet bodies with a household cleaner and dry with a soft cloth.
- 4). Sand the cabinets thoroughly. Using 120-grit sandpaper on a block or small electric sander, remove the old finish by sanding in a circular motion until you remove the gloss from the previous surface. Take a tacky cloth and wipe the sand particles off the pieces until the doors, door facings, and sides are clean and dust free.
- 5). Apply primer. To further your budgeting cabinet remodeling project, paint the cabinet doors and bodies with a coat of water-based, stain-killing primer, which serves as a smooth, durable surface for the finished coat of paint.
- 6). Paint all areas. Use a semigloss interior color of your choice, and paint the doors and cabinets with two coats of paint. Apply in thin, long strokes with the grain of the wood for best results.
- 7). Seal the cabinets. Apply a water-based polyurethane sealer to the painted doors, facings and sides in two coats to protect the finish of the painted old cabinets and reduce the chances of chipping or scraping.
- 8). Spray paint the hardware. To give the hardware a new, fresh look complete the budget cabinet remodeling project by applying a coat of spray paint and spray sealer to the cabinet door hardware. Screwing the hardware into a large piece of cardboard and spraying the paint and sealer on the pieces is a great way to accomplish this task easily.
- 9). Re-assemble the cabinets. Remove the spray-painted hardware from the cardboard, and replace the pieces onto their respective doors. Attach the hinges to the doors and replace them in their original locations for a cheap home remodeling project that is functional and stylish at the same time.
