How to Fix a Wooden Table's Top

    • 1). Take all items off the wooden table's top. Dampen a clean cloth with denatured alcohol. Wipe down the entire tabletop, concentrating on the damaged area. Let the denatured alcohol evaporate.

    • 2). Brush the damaged area of the wooden table top with a #0000 steel wool pad to take up any residual grease or debris that may be inside the damaged portion. Dust off the area thoroughly with a duster.

    • 3). Apply wood filler to the damaged area using a brush or putty knife. Gently scrape or brush away excess filler to make the surface flat and flush. Allow the wood filler to dry according to the manufacturer's directions.

    • 4). Gently sand over the wood filler with fine-grit sandpaper to make it smooth and even. Keep the sandpaper confined to the wood filler as much as possible so not to ruin or scratch the wooden table top's finish. Dust off the wood filler dust.

    • 5). Stain the repaired area with a stain that matches the original tabletop's color. Apply light coats of lighter color stain and let dry. It will darken slightly. Repeat this process until it matches the rest of the table. Once the color matches, allow the stain to fully cure as long as suggested by the manufacturer.

    • 6). Mix oil soap in warm water, following the manufacturer's mixing instructions, after the stain has cured. Dip a clean cloth into the mixture of oil soap and warm water and wash over the entire table. Let air dry to restore shine to the wooden table's top.
