How to Make a Decorative Pail

    • 1). Place newspaper on your work table to protect the area from adhesive residue and paint. Simply toss sticker backing paper, ribbon, and paper scraps onto the newspaper as you work---when you're done, you can roll up and toss out the newspaper to cut clean up time.

    • 2). Brush two coats of acrylic paint onto the pail, letting the first coat dry for 30 minutes before adding the second. Give the container a shabby chic look by using fine-grain sandpaper to sand small patches of paint away along the pail's edges, allowing the original metal to show through.

    • 3). Add another decorative layer on top of the paint. Use a ruler and pencil to mark a strip of patterned paper that's three inches shorter than the bucket. Cut the paper along the marked lines with a paper trimmer and use double-stick tape to affix it around the center of the bucket, centered top to bottom.

    • 4). Affix a themed embellishment to the center of the patterned paper strip. If you're creating an embellished pail to hold flowers for a wedding centerpiece, for example, affix a cluster of paper flowers to the center of the bucket with adhesive dots and add self-adhesive rhinestones as the flower centers.

    • 5). Embellish the pail's handle by using scissors to cut 3-inch-long strips of ribbon that coordinate with the paint color or patterned paper. Add visual interest by choosing ribbon with different patterns, widths, and textures. Take each piece of ribbon, slip it under the handle and tie the ribbon in a knot. Cluster ribbon ties on one side or add the decorative ties along the entire length of the handle.
