How to: Mortar Bed & Concrete Paver Installation

    • 1). Prepare the site for the mortar bed. If you're laying the pavers on an existing concrete slab, clean the surface of stains and debris with a hose and scrub brush. If you're installing them over a gravel foundation, use a bubble level to check that it is level.

    • 2). Mix pre-made mortar mix with the quantity of water specified on the package. Stir it in a wheelbarrow with a paddle bit and drill until it has a thick batter-like consistency.

    • 3). Spread 1/2 inch of mortar over a section large enough to lay four pavers over. Use a notched trowel to cut grooves in the surface so the pavers adhere better.

    • 4). Lay the first section of pavers in your planned arrangement. Butt the edges against each other or lock the beveled sides if you're working with an interlocking paver kit. Set the wooden board over the section and apply even pressure to ensure the pavers are level.

    • 5). Continue setting the pavers in mortar in small sections at a time until the site is complete. Wait a day for the mortar to harden.

    • 6). Fasten edge restraints along the perimeter of the surface with a hammer and lawn spikes to help hold the pavers in place.

    • 7). Sweep stone dust or fine sand across the pavers with a broom and press it into the crevices.

    • 8). Brush concrete paver sealer over the surface with a rolling brush. In addition to enhancing color and making the pavers easier to scrub, the sealer repels water and helps prevent the mortar bed from cracking.
