- Water-based finishes give the floor a more natural appearance because the finish is clear. Oil-based finishes can add golden color, intensity, and shine.
- Most water-based finishes require a two-hour dry time between coats. An oil-based finish requires a five-hour drying period between coats and a final drying of at least 12 hours.
- Water-based finishes contain fewer solids than oil-based finishes and require more coats--four, compared to two. Sanding is suggested between coats when using a water-based finish. A polyurethane should be applied atop a water-based finish but isn't necessary with an oil-based finish.
- As of 2010, water-based finishes cost more than oil-based finishes.
