- Vertical blinds open to the side of the window frame. Horizontal blinds move up and down. Vertical blinds can have a split opening, meaning half of the vanes stack on the left side and the other half stack on the right side of the window. Horizontal blinds stack at the top of the window.
- Vertical vanes slip into a hook at the top of the headrail and can be replaced by removing the vane from the hook. Horizontal slats are held into place by a string ladder and left cord, which must be removed from each slat to replace the slat with a new one.
- Vertical and horizontal blinds can be mounted on the inside of the window or on the outside of the window frame. Vertical blinds need at least a 2-inch deep window frame, but the horizontal blinds can be mounted inside a window frame as small as 1 inch deep.
