- 1). Wash the bedding using fragrance-free laundry detergent. If the bedding is too bulky or specifically states not to wash, spot treat any stains and dirt by applying laundry detergent directly to the stain. Wipe away the stain using a damp cloth and repeat for each spot. You may also add one part of vinegar to three parts water in a spray bottle and spray the bedding to disinfect. Your pet should be placed in a temporary cage or housing while treating the cage and bedding.
- 2). Remove the bedding and line dry to dissipate odors. Spray the vinegar solution under the bedding to clean and remove any remaining odors. Check the label of the bedding before placing in the dryer. Bedding made of cotton is typically safe to place in the dryer. Dryer sheets should not be used when drying pet bedding. The fragrances and chemicals in the sheets can make your pet sick if ingested.
- 3). Run a cycle of hot water with a a half cup of chlorine bleach to clean and disinfect the washing machine from any pet droppings and urine.
