- 1). Open iTunes on your Windows computer by clicking "Start," "All Programs" and "iTunes." Another method is to press the "Windows" key and the "R" key simultaneously on your keyboard and type in "iTunes." Note that the "Windows" key is the one with the Windows logo located next to the "Alt" key.
- 2). Update iTunes if you don't have the latest version. A pop-up appears informing you of the latest iTunes update if you don't already have it. Accepting to get the latest update on that pop-up will automatically start the download and installation of the new version of iTunes. As of 2010, the latest iTunes update is iTunes 9.2.1.
- 3). Plug your iPhone to your Windows computer using the USB charger cable that was provided when you purchased the iPhone.
- 4). Click "Update" on the pop-up that appears informing you that your iPhone is currently in recovery mode. The iTunes program will download the latest iPhone firmware version, backup your iPhone data, install the new firmware into your iPhone and restore all the data back to your iPhone.
