- 1). Download and install a program that supports the transfer of media from an iPod to a computer. See "Resources" for a list of available programs. While most of these programs function in a very similar fashion, look at factors such as price, system requirements and user reviews before making your decision.
- 2). Connect your iPod to your computer. Each iPod comes with a USB cable, containing both a long connector for the dock at the bottom of your iPod and a short connector for your computer's USB port. There is one exception, however: The iPod Shuffle cable contains a 3.5mm plug instead of a long connector, to connect to your headphone jack.
- 3). Open your third-party software. Most of these programs function similarly to iTunes. They contain your content libraries and playlists in the left column, with song titles appearing in list format to the right. Navigate your software window just as you would your iTunes window, selecting your library title in the left column, then highlighting songs the appear on the list. To highlight multiple songs, hold "Shift" and click your titles. Click each song or playlist that you want to transfer.
- 4). Export your music. On your software window, usually appearing in the lower right corner (though sometimes in the upper right corner, as with Senuti, for example), find a button that reads "Export," "Download," "Copy" or "Transfer." Click the button to transfer your selected music back to your hard drive. A pop-up menu may ask you to select a location on your hard drive, which you can do by navigating the folders on the menu.
