How to Make a Styrofoam Base for Columns

    • 1). Measure the diameter of your column. Use a piece of polystyrene foam square block that is at least eight inches wider than the diameter of your column.

    • 2). Place the column in the center of the polystyrene block. Trace its shape with a pencil. Remove the column.

    • 3). Lay a 1/4-inch thick strip of hot glue down along the circular line. Place the column back onto the polystyrene base and press it down into the hot glue. Wrap your arms around the column and hold it down against the square base for five minutes as the glue starts to dry. Let the column sit undisturbed for one hour until the glue dries completely.

    • 4). Decorate the column base by carving lines, ridges and curls into the polystyrene foam square with a hot wire knife. Round edges with a wire brush. Sand all carved edges with 150-grit sandpaper.
