How to Add Moulding to Cabinets

    Applying Cabinet Moulding

    • 1). Remove the door or drawer. Loosen the screws and remove the door from its hinges. Use a carpenter's square to mark a rectangle 1 to 3 inches inside the edge of the door. Make sure your rectangle is inside the pull or handle on your cabinet.

    • 2). Cut four pieces of moulding with the miter saw. Cut two pieces with outside-to-outside, 45 degree miters the length of the long side. Cut 2 pieces the length of your short sides, also with 45 degree outside-to-outside miters. The miter angles away from the center of the of the piece.

Make sure the pieces are held tight against the miter saw fence. Set the saw to 45 degrees and lock it down. Start with the right ends of your pieces. The saw will turn to the left to cut the right-hand outside miter. Cut the miter right on the corner for best material use. Reset in the opposite direction and cut the left miters. Make sure the edge of the blade next to the piece you will keep is on the outside of your mark.

    • 3). Lay the pieces on the rectangle and check for tight corners. Adjust or re-cut any pieces that don't fit snugly. Run a bead of construction adhesive along the back of one strip of moulding and carefully place it on the door. Use painter's tape to hold the piece in place until the adhesive sets. Add the other three pieces, making sure corner joints are tight.

    • 4). Repeat the process with each door and drawer in the bank of cabinets. Allow plenty of time for the adhesive to set before reinstalling doors and drawers. Clean up any excess adhesive with a cotton swab dampened in mineral spirits.
