What Can I Use to Fill a Crack in a Hardwood Floor?

    Pre-finished Floors

    • Most floor manufacturers have proprietary gap and crack filler that they sell specifically for their floors. If you are filling in cracks or gaps in a new floor, or you know which company manufactured your floor, your best bet is to use their product. For older floors, or if you don't know the manufacturer, a silicone-based wood filler such as Bona Kemi Gap Master is an excellent choice. The silicone base allows this type of wood filler to expand and contract as the floor does. Many products of this type come in a variety of tints to match your pre-finished floor.

    Unfinished floors

    • For unfinished floors, you need a wood filler that will take the stain and finish you apply to the rest of the wood. A water-based wood filler such as Timbermate is a good choice for unfinished floors because it does not shrink or crack, it adheres well, and it readily accepts stains, finishes, waxes and oils.
