How to Draw Smoother Lines With a Pen Tool in Illustrator

    • 1). Select the Pen tool from Adobe Illustrator's toolbox.

    • 2). Move the Pen tool into your work area. Click where you want a line to begin and drag the Pen tool until the anchor point's directional lines appear. Be sure to drag the anchor point's directional lines until they are long enough to define the direction of the line the next time you click. Before you release the click, the directional line should be positioned in the exact direction where your next anchor point needs to appear.

    • 3). Reposition the Pen tool in line with the first anchor point's directional line. Then, click and drag the Pen tool again. New directional lines will appear. Point the new directional line towards the next location you plan to click. Continue clicking and dragging with the Pen tool in this fashion until you end up with a single smooth line that consists of multiple curved segments.

    • 4). Press "Enter" to deselect the first curved segment line you drew and then start a new line. Continue clicking and dragging to set each anchor point's directional line towards the position of where you plot another anchor point. Your final product should be multiple lines that consist of only curved segments. Eliminating straight line segments with this drawing technique will create smooth lines, free of abrupt straight segments, as you draw with the pen tool.
