- 1). Remove all molding from the wall with a crowbar. This improves the accuracy of your measurement.
- 2). Consult your toilet specifications and measurements to find out how much room the toilet needs from the back wall to the center of its drain hole at the toilet's base. In almost all cases, this measurement is 12 inches.
- 3). Measure out from the wall 12 inches if your toilet needs 12 inches of space (the standard distance) from the back wall. If your toilet requires more space, measure out the total distance the toilet requires from the wall. Always measure from the finished drywall, not the framing, since drywall will decrease the total distance from the drain by 5/8 inches in most cases.
- 4). Make a clear line on the floor with a pencil and ruler at your measurement.
- 5). Measure out at least 15 inches from the closest sidewall next to where you plan to install the drain. Make another mark at this point. Where the two lines intersect is the center line for your drain hole. This is where you will set the toilet.
