- 1). Measure and cut two pieces of denim fabric 15 inches wide by 45 inches long. One piece will be the outer smock fabric and one will be the lining. This art smock will be reversible. Place the two pieces together with the wrong sides facing and the edges matching. Pin the smock edges together.
- 2). Draw a rectangle that is 3-1/2 inches wide by 5 inches long on a piece of newspaper. Cut out the rectangle. This is the neck pattern. Fold the pinned smock in half with the short ends matching. Center the neck pattern on the folded edge of the smock with a 5-inch edge against the fold. Pin the pattern through the layers of the smock. Cut around the pattern and remove. Unfold the art smock and lay flat. The neckline will measure 5 inches wide by 7 inches long. Pin the outer and lining fabrics together around the neckline.
- 3). Cut one length of 1-inch wide bias tape 48 inches long. Fold the length in half, matching the long edges. Iron the tape and pin the long edges together. Topstitch the length of the bias tape as close to the pinned edge as possible. Measure and cut the bias tape into four pieces, each 12 inches long. These are the ties for your art smock.
- 4). Fold the pinned smock in half with the short ends matching. On the side facing up, measure down the long sides from the folded edge 8 inches. Insert an inch of a bias-tape piece between the outer and lining layers on each long edge and pin. Turn the smock over and again measure down 8 inches from the folded edge. Insert the remaining bias-tape pieces an inch between the outer and lining layers on each long edge and pin.
- 5). Topstitch around the entire edge of the smock a 1/2 inch from the edge. This will attach the outer and lining pieces together and attach the smock ties. Topstitch around the neckline a 1/2 inch from the edge to finish the opening. Place the art smock on your child. One half of the smock length hangs down the front of the child and the other half hangs down the back. Tie a front and back tie together on each side of the child.
