- 1). Start Windows explorer by double-clicking the icon for "My Computer" or "My Documents," or by holding down the Windows key and pressing "E."
- 2). Browse to the folder containing the subfolders with the files you'd like to count.
- 3). Right-click the target folder and select "Properties" at the bottom of the pop-up menu, to get the number of files from one subfolder.
- 4). Look on the "General" tab of the "Properties" dialog where it says "Contains." It gives the number of files and subfolders contained in that folder.
- 5). Select (highlight) the folders for which you want to get a count, to get the total number of files contained in multiple folders.
- 6). Right-click the highlighted folders and select "Properties" in the pop-up menu.
- 7). Look at the top of the "Properties" dialog. The number of files and subfolders contained in those folders will be displayed. The folders counted will include all the highlighted folders as well as any subfolders they contain. The counted files will include all the files in the folders and in their subfolders, if any.
- 8). Right-click on a blank area of the Explorer window (not on any file or folder) and select "Properties" in the pop-up menu, to get the total number of all subfolders and files in the current folder showing in Windows Explorer. The Properties dialog will say "Contains" and give the number of files and subfolders contained in the current folder, including the files in the current folder, if any.
