Rigid foam board is used in the construction industry as an insulation and structural support material. Foam core board is a craft material used for mounting photos and art, or for creating displays and presentations. Both types of foam board can contain formaldehyde, a health hazard, or release ozone-depleting chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) into the atmosphere during the manufacturing process. Traditional foam board is also non-biodegradable, and until recently, not recyclable. Foam board makers and suppliers offer several environmentally-friendly, or "green," alternatives for foam board products. - Insulation Depot, located in Massachusetts, reclaims and recycles rigid foam board building materials that are non-biodegradable, keeping them out of landfills and putting reusable supplies back into the market. Insulation Depot offers composite, extruded polystyrene, ISO and EPS white beadboard. All of their reclaimed products are structurally sound, less expensive than new products, and contribute no new pollution to the environment.

InSite is a biodegradable foam board for mounting, painting and laminating signs and displays which uses at least 15% recycled material and degrades in less than five years once it is discarded. DuraPlast is a foam board that is both recyclable and biodegradable. Both products are tested and certified by independent laboratories.
