How to Wire Wrap Rocks

    • 1). Choose the rocks that you want to wire wrap. Decide which rocks from your collection would make the best jewelry. Plan to wrap the rocks with fine wire to create necklace pendants. Determine how many rocks you want to wrap, and which ones you would love to wear the most.

    • 2). Use a small pair of wire cutters to cut a 12 inch piece of sterling silver wire. Fold the end of the wire over ½ to ¾ of an inch, depending on how large and wide your rock is. The wire's length should be running vertically, the folded end horizontally. Let the length of the fold equal the width of the rock.

    • 3). Grasp the rock so that the side you have chosen to be the front side is facing you, the side you want on the top is at the top, and the end you want towards the bottom is facing down.

    • 4). Apply a thin bead of jewelry adhesive to the backside of the rock, ¼ inch up from the bottom edge.

    • 5). Lay the folded end of the wire on the bead of jewelry adhesive, press it into place and hold for 25 seconds. Wrap the wire around the rock over the adhesive bead 3 to 4 times, with the last wrap bringing the wire to the front of the rock. Apply another dot of jewelry adhesive to the backside of the rock, wrap the wire around to that spot and firmly press it into the adhesive. Hold for 25 seconds.

    • 6). Run the wire directly up the center of the backside of the stone. Do not cut the wire. Apply a bead of jewelry adhesive to the backside of the stone, horizontally across it's width, ½ to ¼ inch down from the top edge of the stone. Wrap the wire over the bead of adhesive 3 to 4 times, bringing the wire up and over the top of the stone with each wrap around the stone. Take the wire from the back of the, up over the top, and down around the front, wrapping back to the back and then over the top again. Apply a dot of jewelry adhesive over the wire on the back side of the stone. Wrap the wire around, over and behind the stone a final time, allowing the wire to end up in the dot of adhesive. Press the wire firmly into the adhesive, hold for 25 seconds, and then snip the wire. Cut the wire as close to the stone as you can.

    • 7). Open a sterling silver jump ring. Insert the jump ring through the loop of wire on top of the stone. Close the jump ring. Insert a sterling silver chain through it for a gorgeous sterling silver wrapped rock necklace.
