DIY Chair Rail

    • 1). Measure 30 to 36 inches vertically from your floor molding. Any height between these two measurements is acceptable for a chair rail, so use the height that works best for your space. Mark the spot at the top of your measurement.

    • 2). Move three feet down the wall and measure and mark again; repeat this all the way around the perimeter of the room.

    • 3). Using your long straight edge, connect your dots across the room with a continuous line. Check the line for levelness as you go.

    • 4). Measure three inches above the line you just drew and mark that spot. Increase or decrease this amount depending on how wide or thin you want your chair rail. Mark another spot three feet down the wall; continue around the room’s perimeter.

    • 5). Draw another continuous line connecting these dots. Check for levelness as you go.

    • 6). Lay your painters tape directly on top these lines, taking care to keep the tape perfectly straight and erasing the pencil marks just beneath the tape as you go. Check your tape lines for levelness, adjusting as necessary.

    • 7). Press the tape firmly down before painting.

    • 8). Paint inside these lines. Paint an additional coat. Allow paint to completely dry. Pull off the tape to reveal your painted DIY chair rail.
