- You can create a calendar of moon phases to help you or your child understand and appreciate the phases of the Moon, including the new moon. Fold a large sheet of black construction paper in half. Cut one half into eight horizontal strips. List one of the eight phases of the moon on each strips with a white gel marker. With a yellow gel marker, draw a picture of what the moon looks like in that phase. Glue white strips of paper under each flap and write facts about each phase of the Moon on the white paper.
- A creative way to interpret the phases of the Moon is to attempt to plant flowers according to moon phases. As a craft project, you could plant flowers on a new moon and others on a full moon. Chart the growth of the flowers to see if there is any correlation between the phases of the Moon and plant growth. Alternatively, plant flowers as the Moon is waning and then plant others of the same species when the Moon is waxing and note the flowers' progress.
