- 1). Design your ideal attic room. This will largely depend on how much space you have. If there is just one small room, your design might simply be a raised ceiling and an added skylight. However, if there is a larger space, you may be able to do more, such as having two separate areas for a guest bedroom and computer desk.
- 2). Talk to your local government office about any regulations you need to follow if construction is necessary to create an attic room. Some construction that might be necessary includes adding insulation, strengthening floor beams, venting the heating or air-conditioning system, adding windows or finishing surfaces, such as the walls or floor. Each of these projects may require a separate permit.
- 3). Consult a contractor before beginning your attic room project. Unless you are a professional contractor, you will most likely need to hire someone to do major home renovations, such as those listed above. Make sure the contractor you choose is licensed and experienced in attic renovations.
- 4). Decorate your space. Once the construction elements are completed, you can start adding design elements to the attic room. The design elements can include carpeting, paint, furniture and accessories, such as paintings, rugs and other decorative items.
