How to Compress Files in Command Line

    • 1). Click the "Start" button and the "Search" box. Type "cmd," right-click on the command line icon that appears and click "Run as Administrator" in the drop-down menu that displays.

    • 2). . Type "cd c:\directoryname\filelocation\" and substitute "\directoryname\filelocation\" with the full directory path to the files you wish to compress. Press the "Enter" key and the command line prompt will jump to the location of the files you wish to compress.

    • 3). Type "compact.exe filename /c /s /i" and substitute "filename" with the name of the file you wish to compress. If you wish to compress all files within the directory, substitute "filename" with "*.*".
